WAKEFIELD – What would you do if you had a fortune and a mansion full of beautiful things? Barbra Streisand built a mall of make-believe shops in her basement to hold her memorabilia. This whimsical reality led playwright Jonathan Tolins to write the charming play Buyer and Cellar, playing at the Contemporary Theater Company September 11 – 20.
WAKEFIELD – The Contemporary Theater Company has long been surprising audiences and the community with its bold and ambitious moves. The company is thrilled to announce the purchase of riverfront property adjacent to the theater that they have occupied in Downtown Wakefield since 2012.
The purchase and upcoming renovation of the property at 321 Main Street is the keystone of a $390,000 expansion for the company that will include, most notably, a riverfront patio for outdoor performances set to open September 20, 2015, pending a successful capital campaign.
2/12/15 The Time-Traveling Poppys and Children’s Classes
WAKEFIELD – Winter means parents are always looking for something to do with the kids. The Contemporary Theater Company has expanded its programming for children and families to help keep the winter blues away!
The company is offering new classes for children 8-10 years old and 14-18 years old starting, with plans for more.
“These classes will offer students the opportunity to work with professional mentors in a supportive, challenging and cost-effective environment,” says instructor and Associate Artistic Director Ryan Hartigan. “As an award-winning theatre company, we’re really excited to provide the opportunity for youth to learn from professional artists.”
These classes will teach the basics of theater and provide students with a creative environment in which to learn and have fun.
For children of all ages, the company performs The Time-Traveling Poppys every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The show lasts 45 minutes to an hour and features adventures each from the lives of Poppy Anne, Poppy Sue, and their dog Baxter, as well as improvisation and a special “snacktivity” break provided by The Goddard School, a local preschool.
“There is something new performed every week,” says Maggie Cady, one of the writers on the project. “Kids can come any week and enjoy the story, or they can come every week and really get to know and love the characters.”
The time-traveling nature of the show means that there are lots of different story opportunities. One week they might be visiting the Founding Fathers, the next they are on the moon, according to Cady.
Until March 1, every Sunday at 5 p.m. the improv wing of the Contemporary Theater Company performs Tales from the Frumbly Forest, family-friendly, improvised, fantasy stories. You might see anything from pirates to fairies to princesses to ogres. The shows are appropriate for all ages.
